deliveries or, like you said,
a crew doing maintenance
somewhere in the
other townhouses?"
Jake asked. It was just a standard white van,
Shirley said. No logo, no decals,
nothing like that.
And the entire time I saw it parked there,
F
I never any repairmen or deliveries.
G
Odd, isn't it? How many times
had you seen it
before Laura asked you about it?
Tessa asked. Two other
times.
A few days apart.
Tessa was grateful for the information,
but was also getting the vibe
that Shirley might be the sort of sit -around
and look out of her window all day,
looking for juicy gossip
and rumours to spread,
but if that was the case,
it was paying off now.
She was also reminded of the co -worker at the hospital,
who had made the claim that Laura had made
a comment about feeling watched.
She had never specified
that she was feeling watched

Shirley admitted,
shaking her head slowly.

but a plain white van unmarked.
It is strange."
She sighed again,
maybe a bit too dramatic.
"'I wish I could tell you more,
but since Laura—well,
ever since she was killed,
I haven't seen it again.'
"'I see,' Tessa said. "'And
would you say you were close with Laura?'
"'Fairly close, I suppose.
Would you happen to know
if there was anyone in her life
she might consider an enemy?'
Shirley gave this a bit of thought,
but eventually shook her head.
No, not that I know of.
We were friendly,
and, on occasion,
F
G
would even have coffee together in the mornings in her kitchen,
but she never got into any personal details,
not really.
G
Just talked about work,
the weather,
F
events coming up over the weekend,
things like that.
F
conversation coming to an end.
It had been moderately helpful,
but she sensed their time
