My grandfather's family
-sized 70s TV
stood defiantly in the corner.
It weighed a ton and had an aerial
D
D
fashioned out of a coat hanger.
G
G
It's pictured just about good
enough
to make out figures through a
coloured static snow.
The walls were painted a swampy green,
miserable on reflection
but somehow finally in tune
with the mood of an adolescent.

A crumbling black leather sofa
divided the space,
gaffer tape holding it together at
the corners.
Ugly, but cool,
plus none of my friends had a sofa.
It somehow felt grown up,
especially when entertaining the first girl
D
D
to set foot in my room.
G
G
Above my bed hung a magic eye poster,
blue -tacked down
but always trying to escape.
It was a satisfying day
when the image finally revealed itself
D
D
to be a shoal of dolphins.
G
G
Mates would come round
and say they could see it,
D
D
but you could tell the ones
who were lying.

Nobody wanted to be

in the I -can't -see -it club.

I had a twin Panasonic radio
Em

cassette player
G

that would be tuned for the evening
session at seven
and then later mark Radcliffe as I
A
A
did my homework.
G

I vividly remember Sixpence None the Richest
Kiss Me playing on that radio
A
A
as I mourned the death of my first pet,
a black rabbit called Edward.

There was a small desk
G
G
built from leftover ply
that sat under the oval
D

-shaped window.
G

We had a secondhand PC
that I'd often jam the phone line with
as I downloaded tracks from LimeWire. A once -loved,
now battery -less,
D

G
G
dancing Coke can sat
D

atop the monitor.
G

Maths and science were always a struggle,
everything and anything a distraction,
A
A
but when it came to art,
I'd put on a record
Em

an d blissfully disappear into my
G

drawings.
My parents' heavily -scratched vinyl copies
A
A
of Harvest and Transformer
spent most time I moved from the deck.
G
G
It was years before I
heard those songs
A

minus the skips which
ate into the lyrics,
starving them of their conclusion.

My bed boasted an 80s geometric
D

airbrush design duvet cover
G

and was overlooked by
a small set of shelves
which proudly displayed my
Star Wars figure collection.
My pride and though,
was a black Squire Strat
D

and accompanying bullet reverb amp.
This is still the best Christmas
D

present
G

I've ever received.
The guitar was often the
centrepiece of the room
A
A
when friends came round,
G
G
that and a Super Nintendo
that I'd lightly yellowed
Em

G

by the sun.
A

It would soon be outdated
G
G
of course by an N64,
A
A
with countless hours lost to Goldeneye.
G

I'd later paint the room a garish orange
when I turned 16,
A
A
and life turned fully technicolour.
