The smoke was hanging low and thick
G
and the guitar man was hunting licks
A
and Joe Ely was in the back
Now we all went back there to check it out
G

Joe and me kind of drew a crowd

and pulled out a big ol' onion
He placed that onion on
the belt and said
G
Here's where you're gonna
need some help
A

Then Joe picked up a big ol' broom
G
And he waved it all around the room
A
Said, I'm gonna play that onion cue ball
We battled back and forth all night
G
The tears were streaming from our eyes
for an eight ball
Now the place got quiet as a mouse
G
And we told the guitar man to lay out
A
And I could barely see that onion
But I sipped a beer and fought back tears
G
And watched that eight ball disappear
A
And the whole damn town of Lubbock,
And amidst the yelling and the cheers
G
Joe said y 'all wait till next year
