G
D
A
ye who
are weary, come home.
D
I'd like to tell a story if
G
you folks wouldn't mind.
D
this one's true and it really happened
in the little hometown of mine.
E
A
There was this kind old
colored fella
of whom the folks were always fun.
D
I don't even remember what his
last name was.
G
We always just called him Uncle John.
D
I remember when I was little
G
I used to go see him nearly every day
D
just to sit and hear his stories
A
and to while some time away.
G
While he was in his height of glory
when there was children around his feet,
D
A
I've seen him smile right out loud
and say, lousy me, children,
you sure is sweet.
D
Now I know in this big wide world
G
there must be kind folks
by the bushel,
A
D
G
but I just believe that in this one old man,
D
the Lord put something special.
Well, I've seen times when folks was sick,
that old man would walk for miles
G
just to offer his assistance
D
and help out a little while.
E
He was always doing things like that,
A
giving things which he couldn't afford.
Funny thing was, he never
G
always said he was just work
ing for the Lord.
D
Now, Uncle John had this sickness
that he didn't know about.
G
D
Folks didn't know whether to tell him
or just let him live it out.
all decided
that they ought to let him know.
if he'd go tell him,
A
he said, yeah, he'd go.
E
A
He found old John a -sittin'
in his homemade rockin' chair,
G
D
thumbin' through a worn -out bible,
G
reciting little scriptures here
and there.
A
D
A doc was scared and he was nervous
because he didn't know quite where to
start.
Don't you know his conscience fought
him
G
because he'd come to break
G
But he gathered up his courage
A
and he found the words to say,
D
A
Uncle John, the Lord's coming,
he gonna take you away.
D
G
They must have been a choir of angels started
singing in that old man's ears
A
for a great big smile come on him
G
and his eyes broke out in tears
D
and he said why dr. Boyd
A
that's about the most glorious news
I ever heard
D
I've been living let's see 85 years
A
E
I guess just to hear them blessed words
A
D
now to know that he finally calling me
G
D
A
D
to leave this earthly sod doc

I've been living all of my life
